Ask a better tarot question

Give your reading a clear focus by asking about a situation, choice, or next step.

Begin with what you can influence

A tarot question can create room for reflection or close it down. “Will I succeed?” asks a card to settle the future. “What would help me take the next step?” brings your attention back to choices you can make. The second question does not guarantee an outcome; it gives the reading a practical focus.

Try starting with what, how or where. What deserves my attention? How could I approach this conversation? Where am I overlooking support? Choose a question that feels specific enough to matter and open enough to invite a new perspective.

Give the reading one job

A question that includes your work, relationship and next five years gives every card too much to carry. Pick one situation. You can return for another reading later, after you have had time to notice what the first one brought up.

For a three-card reflection, ask what to keep, what to release and what to learn. These positions give the same image three different roles. A card about persistence might be helpful in “keep” and an invitation to loosen your grip in “release.”

Check the interpretation against your life

Write down the first thing you notice in the image before reading a meaning. Then compare the suggested meaning with what you actually know. Keep the parts that illuminate the question; question the parts that feel forced. A card is a prompt, not evidence about another person’s intentions.
